Japan will allocate 5.5 billion dollars to Ukraine for reconstruction

Japan will provide Ukraine with an aid package worth 5.5 billion dollars for the restoration of war-damaged infrastructure, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Monday. On February 24, on the anniversary of Russia’s military invasion, Japan, which this year chairs the Group of Seven, will hold a videoconference of G7 leaders, in which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will also participate.

During the videoconference, the heads of the world’s largest economies will discuss the possibilities of further assistance to Ukraine.

During the war, Japan has already provided Ukraine with a financial aid package worth 600 million dollars, as well as significant amounts of humanitarian aid, the total cost of which is also estimated at hundreds of millions.

Japan joined the USA and the European Union in imposing sanctions against Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine. The country introduced a ban on the export of vaccines, medical equipment and robots to Russia. It is also prohibited to import radioactive materials, equipment for nuclear facilities, oil and natural gas exploration into Russia. In addition, the Japanese authorities expanded the list of personal sanctions against Russian citizens and companies.

About 300 Russian companies and organizations have already been subject to Japanese sanctions. The Japanese authorities froze the assets of VTB, Sberbank, Vnesheconombank, Otkritie Bank, Promsvyazbank and Alfa Bank.
