A court in Moscow sentenced journalist Ayder Muzhdabaev to six years in prison in absentia. According to TASS, the court found Muzhdabaev guilty under the article on public appeals to terrorism or justification of terrorism. Earlier, he was declared a federal wanted man by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

As reported by “Mediazon”, the case against Muzhdabayev was initiated in 2019, at the same time he was included in the “list of terrorists and extremists” maintained by Rosfinmonitoring. The Investigative Committee reported that the reason was two posts on Facebook, where Muzhdabayev called for “by force to seize Russian agents” and exchange them for Ukrainian director Oleg Sentsov, who was then serving a sentence in the Russian colony in Labytnanga.

“Put assault rifles to their (Russian agents’) temples and, under camera, demand that Putin immediately hand over Sentsov in exchange for them. Otherwise, shoot them without trial and investigation. I understand that this is illegal, that it looks wild, but the death of Sentsov I refuse to accept without requests to save my ego in any — any — ways,” said the post dated August 8, 2018. Then Sentsov continued his hunger strike, which he held for 145 days. In September 2019, Sentsov returned to Ukraine as part of the exchange of detained persons between Russia and Ukraine.

  • Ayder Muzhdabaev is a Russian opposition journalist who worked for 17 years in the newspaper “Moskovsky Komsomolets”, 9 of them as deputy editor-in-chief. In 2015, due to disagreement with the annexation of Crimea and the actions of the Russian authorities in eastern Ukraine, as well as disagreement with the editorial policy of MK, he resigned and moved to Kyiv, where he received Ukrainian citizenship.
  • Now Muzhdabaev works as the deputy general director of the Crimean Tatar TV channel ATR, based in Kyiv, and maintains a blog on YouTube. In it, he harshly criticizes the Russian authorities, and after the departure of Petro Poroshenko from the post of President of Ukraine, the current Ukrainian authorities as well.
