As of August 11, the names of 30,003 Russian servicemen who died during the war with Ukraine are known. The Russian Service of the BBC and “Mediazon” together with a team of volunteers are conducting the count of losses. The list includes only the dead whose names and places of burial have been established.

Researchers are counting on open sources – reports from local administrations, mass media and relatives of the dead, as well as data from cemeteries. The real number of losses, in their opinion, can be two to two and a half times higher. So, at the end of May of this year, the estimate published by “Mediazone” and “Meduza” showed the number of people killed in the war at 47 thousand people. Journalists obtained this number based on data on the excess mortality of men of fighting age.

Since the previous summary on July 28, 1,351 names have been added to the list.

As in the previous weeks, the increase in the number of dead servicemen of missile troops and artillery was somewhat greater than before.

Over the past two weeks, it became known about the death of four officers in the rank of lieutenant colonel and above. There are now 284 people in the list of dead high-ranking officers.

  • The Ministry of Defense of Russia does not publish official data on its losses in the war in Ukraine. The last time the Russian authorities cited the total number of dead in September 2022 was 5,937 people.
  • In June 2023, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported that during the Ukrainian counteroffensive, the Russian combined troop group lost 71 servicemen, and another 210 were wounded.
  • Ukraine also does not disclose war losses. In the spring, it became known from leaked Pentagon documents that American intelligence estimated the losses of the Ukrainian army at 15.5–17.5 thousand killed and 109–113 thousand wounded.
