As of July 7, the names of 27,423 Russian servicemen who died during the war with Ukraine are known. Losses were calculated by the Russian Service of the BBC and Mediazon together with a team of volunteers.

At least 240 people, including several high-ranking officers, have died since the beginning of the counteroffensive of the Armed Forces. Since June 4, at least one general, two colonels and three lieutenant colonels of the Russian armed forces, as well as 12 more officers, have died on the territory of Ukraine. As journalists note, the last time such significant losses were suffered by senior officers of the Russian army only in the very first months of the war. The authors of the study also note that this is “the lowest estimate of Russian losses,” and the real number is “definitely higher.”

The most significant category of identified losses still remains prisoners – the researchers established the names of 5,211 dead convicts. Most of the dead convicts fought as part of the PMC “Wagner”.

In total, journalists are aware of the death of 2,275 mobilized Russians – 60% of them died in the period from January 1, 2023.

According to the authors of the study, the real number of losses can be at least twice as high. Thus, the number of dead, according to the most conservative estimate, may be 55 thousand people. Russia’s irretrievable losses, taking into account those who were disabled due to serious injury or death, may amount to at least 247 thousand people.
