Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian aggression in Ukraine, more than 33 thousand Russian soldiers have died at the front, of which about four thousand are mobilized. Their identities were established by journalists of the Russian Service of the BBC and Mediazony together with a team of volunteers.
Since the start of the Ukrainian offensive in July 2023, approximately two and a half thousand Russian soldiers have died, including more than 200 officers, including two generals and 11 colonels.
The last time such significant losses were suffered by senior officers of the Russian army only in the very first months of the war.
At the same time, every third person who died during the repulse of the offensive of the Armed Forces was mobilized. In total, since February of last year, about four thousand mobilized people have died in the war, whose names the journalists managed to verify using open sources.
The investigators recorded the greatest losses among Russian prisoners recruited for the war against Ukraine. Journalists were able to establish the names of more than six thousand convicts who died at the front as of September 29. More than 100 of them were citizens of foreign states, mostly Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
The Russian side does not publish data on the dead. The last time the Ministry of Defense reported on losses was in September 2022. Then Sergei Shoigu said that approximately six thousand servicemen had died.
Investigators establish the names of the dead on the basis of open data and believe that the real number of casualties may be much higher.
Ukraine, like Russia, does not disclose data on the losses of its servicemen. In the conditions of hostilities, the warring parties can reduce their losses and exaggerate the losses of the enemy.
