The court in Kemerovo sentenced human rights defender Dmitry Kamynin to 18 years in a strict regime colony. He was found guilty of drug distribution and extortion. Kamynin was the coordinator of the “Legal Siberia” project, which covered cases of torture and beatings in places of deprivation of liberty. The second coordinator of the project, Vladimir Taranenko, is also in pre-trial detention center on charges of extortion.

Dmitry Kamynin was arrested in December 2020. Initially, he was charged with drug distribution, then an article on extortion, committed, according to the investigation, in 2017, was added to the case. While in the pre-trial detention center, he complained of violence by the institution’s staff. According to Kamynin, they beat him, tried to tear his mouth, created torturous conditions of detention. He also stated that the pre-trial detention center staff stopped sending his complaints to the prosecutor’s office and the Investigative Committee.

According to Kamynin’s mother, her son denied his guilt. She believes that they “just want to imprison” him.

ANO “Legal Siberia” was engaged in the protection of the rights of prisoners. In 2019, Kamynin and Taranenko opened a YouTube channel, where they published video interviews with ex-convicts about beatings, extortion and bullying in Kuzbass pre-trial detention centers and colonies. Interviews were given by both the victims and the “pressmen” who carried out the violence.

Views of the channel recordings reached 3 million. The result of their work was, in particular, the arrest at the end of January 2020 of four employees of colony No. 37 in the Kemerovo region. The human rights portal “Legal Siberia” has repeatedly published confessions of IK-37 prisoners about torture and mockery in it.

Since 2021, the work of “Sibiri Pravovoy” has been stopped. It is known from the relatives of Kamynin and Taranenko that after the arrest of the human rights defenders, FSIN employees tried to obtain the password and login of this YouTube channel by deception and threats.
