The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine decided to nationalize Sense Bank, the former Alfa-Bank Ukraine. The nominal price of assets was one hryvnia. Assets are taken over by the State Export-Import Bank of Ukraine. Clients are guaranteed the safety of their deposits.
Sense Bank was part of the structure of the Russian “Alfa-Bank”. Its shareholders were Russian billionaires Pyotr Aven, Mikhail Fridman and Andrey Kosogov. “Alfa-Bank Ukraine” was renamed Sense Bank in March 2022, shortly after the beginning of the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. Then its main owners were removed from the management of the bank.
Piotr Aven and Mikhail Fridman are under sanctions of the European Union and Ukraine as businessmen close to the Russian government. In May 2022, Ukraine announced the seizure of Friedman’s assets in the amount of $420 million, which were kept in the Ukrainian branch of Alfa Bank.
The National Bank of Ukraine clarified that Sense Bank will be under state management until the end of martial law in the country. After this, it will be possible to hand it over to private hands.
