“Luna-25” with a landing module is being prepared for launch at “Vostochny”.

In Moscow, after repeated delays, it was announced that the Luna-25 space probe was about to be launched to the Moon. The lander will take soil samples in the region of the south pole of the Moon and conduct “prolonged scientific research”, AFP reported.

The assembly of the Soyuz launch vehicle and the installation of the lunar landing module took place at the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Amur Region.

The task of the mission includes a soft landing on the surface of the Moon, analysis of soil samples and subsequent long-term inspection of the landing area – for the first time, it will be an area adjacent to the south pole of the Moon. The mass media draw attention to the fact that the previous landings on the moon were carried out relatively close to the lunar equator.

According to the representative of Roscosmos, the launch is scheduled for the early hours of Friday. This is the first Russian spacecraft to fly to the Moon since 1976. AFP notes President Vladimir Putin’s intention to develop space exploration in cooperation with China, which has been actively developing its national lunar program in recent years, along with manned orbital flights and the construction of its own long-term orbital station.
