A number of Russian officials and politicians on Sunday commented on the statements of US Senator Lindsay Graham, made during a visit to Kyiv on May 26. They claim that the senator called the “killing of Russians” the best investment the United States could make. There are accusations and threats against Graham.

In a video published by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi on Friday, the Republican senator, a well-known critic of the Russian authorities and a supporter of increasing aid to Ukraine, discusses the war with Russia and the supply of weapons with Ukrainian leaders. Zelensky tells him that the war for Ukraine is being waged under the slogan “live free or die.” “And we now live free,” says Zelensky. “And the Russians (it can also be translated as “Russians” – RS) are dying,” Graham states. After this, the perspective changes, that is, it can be about assembly glue, and the senator says: “We have never spent money so successfully.” Immediately after this phrase, Zelensky thanks Washington for the supply of weapons to Ukraine.

In Moscow, more than a day after its publication, the video was interpreted unambiguously – as what Graham called the killing of Russians (and not aid to Ukraine) the best investment of the USA. The press secretary of the Kremlin Dmitry Peskov said: “It is difficult to imagine a greater shame for the country than having such senators”, and the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova accused the USA of financing Hitler’s Germany: “The Coca-Cola plant in Cologne and before its nationalization by the German government regularly supplied soda, including German soldiers. And the famous “Fanta” was actually invented by the Nazis.”

The Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, commented on the senator’s statements in a telegram, writing that in the USA “they regularly kill not only ordinary people, but also spend dirty money on killing senators.” “Let him remember the sad fate of Robert Kennedy,
Huey Long, Clementy Carlos Pinckna, John Milton Elliott,
Wayne Owens, as well as other American politicians,” Medvedev wrote, listing the names of US senators killed at different times.

This is not the first veiled death threat that Medvedev has made against Graham. In March of this year, Medvedev in his typical manner commented on the incident with the crash of the American Reaper MQ-9 drone over the Black Sea on March 14. Graham then called for shooting down Russian planes in the event of a threat to American facilities. Medvedev commented on his words as follows: “By the way, aviation accidents sometimes happen with such creatures”, provided the statement with an emoji with the image of a cross.

  • Last spring, attention was drawn to Graham’s statement that there should be a “Colonel Stauffenberg” in the ranks of the Russian armed forces, which can be interpreted as a call for the physical elimination of Vladimir Putin – by analogy with the failed attempt on Adolf Hitler.
  • The advisor of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Mykhailo Podoliak, wrote on Twitter on Sunday that, in his opinion, the best investments today are really investments in the “complete and unconditional victory of Ukraine.”
