More than 46,500 Russian soldiers have been confirmed dead in Ukraine

Journalists identified the names of 46,678 Russian soldiers who died in the war in Ukraine since February 2022. An independent count is conducted by the Russian Service of the BBC and Mediazon together with a team of volunteers. These are only the names that have been confirmed by open sources. The real scale of losses can be significantly higher.
In the two weeks that have passed since the publication of the last summary, the death of another 1,555 people has been confirmed, which is one of the highest figures since the beginning of the war.
Journalists note that messages about the death of soldiers often reach relatives with a delay. Therefore, the surge in casualties may be partly related to the consequences of the Avdeevka storm. But there are also confirmations of more recent losses associated with requests to advance the offensive of the Russian army in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
The greatest number of casualties are now borne by volunteers who went to the front (plus 382 confirmed dead in two weeks), mobilized (plus 219 dead), and prisoners recruited from the colonies (plus 191 dead), notes the BBC. The total number of losses on the Russian side increases significantly if you include in the list those who fought against Ukraine as part of the “people’s militia” of the self-proclaimed DPR and LPR.
The researchers calculate based on open sources – reports from local administrations, mass media and relatives of the dead, as well as data from cemeteries. The real number of losses, in their opinion, can be at least twice as high.
Earlier, the head of the CIA, William Burns, said that since the beginning of the war, 315 thousand Russian soldiers had been killed or wounded. Journalists believe that Burns’ estimate is close to reality.
