More than 49,000 Russian soldiers have been confirmed dead

By March 29, more than 49,000 Russian servicemen had died in the war with Ukraine. Almost 1,600 people have died in the two weeks since the previous count on March 15. This is stated in the new calculations of the journalists of “Mediazone” and the BBC, as well as a team of volunteers.

According to the latest data, more than 3,300 army officers and other security forces are among the dead. About 400 of them hold the rank of lieutenant colonel and above.

The highest death rate during the war was among prisoners – almost nine thousand people. This is approximately 18% of the total number of dead. Among the volunteers, the losses amounted to almost six and a half thousand (13%), and among the mobilized – a little less than six thousand (12%).

The largest number of dead servicemen aged 33 to 35 years – more than five thousand people.

Journalists conduct calculations based on open data. The real number of dead may turn out to be much higher.

“Vyorstka” sources previously reported that the Russian authorities are planning to start a mass recruitment to the army to strengthen the group fighting with Ukraine and the possible encirclement of Kharkov. According to the interlocutors of the publication, as part of the possible mobilization, 300 thousand people can be called up.

According to the CIA, more than 300,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded since the beginning of the war.

Ukraine and Russia rarely publish data on their losses.

At a press conference on February 25, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky for the first time disclosed the losses of the Ukrainian army in the war with Russia. According to him, 31 thousand Ukrainian soldiers died. It is not known whether it was only about the army or about all armed units controlled by the command of the Armed Forces.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in December that the Ukrainian army had lost 383,000 people killed and wounded. Moscow itself does not reveal its losses in the war.
