In Russia, at least 60 schools have been renamed in honor of the participants in the war in Ukraine, according to the publication “Vazhney istorii”. Almost half of them are in Dagestan. The decision to rename a school is usually made by city or municipal administrations.

In the vast majority of cases, schools are given the names of deceased contractors and professional soldiers. The names of those mobilized by “Vazhnye istorii” were not found, but two participants of PMC “Wagner” were found – educational institutions in Balashikha and Vladivostok near Moscow were named in their honor. Moreover, the dead mercenaries were not related to any of these schools.

27 renamed schools – in Dagestan. Three each in Chechnya, Tatarstan, Tver and Vladimir regions. In the Khabarovsk region, in the village of Mongokhto, there is a school named after “Heroes of a special military operation”.

According to the current recommendations of the government, the assignment of honorary names to educational institutions is “a form of patriotic education”, says one of the interlocutors of “Important Histories”. In addition to new names for schools, so-called heroes’ desks are installed in classrooms, usually in honor of graduates or parents of students who died in the war, and commemorative plaques are installed on some buildings.
