Moscow is a leader in gender equality among Russian regions

Moscow leads the ranking of Russian regions in terms of gender equality. In the last places are Chechnya and Magadan. The rating was compiled by the project “Esly bet tochnym”.

Regions were ranked by the sum of five indicators: life expectancy, wage gap, women’s participation in politics, time spent caring for children, and women’s participation in business.

Magadan Oblast, Chechnya, Kamchatka Krai, Smolensk Oblast, Dagestan, and Mordovia were included in the list of the least equal regions (listed from the end).

In the Magadan Region, the highest gender gap in wages and childcare is highest. Men earn one and a half times as much as women, but spend almost nine times less time on children. In addition, there are only two women and nineteen men in the regional Duma.

There are no women in the Chechen parliament at all: all 41 seats are occupied by men. The difference in parental care time is slightly less than in the Magadan region: fathers account for 12% of the minutes of child care.

The most favorable situation with gender equality is in Moscow, Tyumen, Tula and Volgograd regions (listed from the beginning). At the same time, Moscow leads by a large margin. On average, the salaries of Moscow men are 18% higher than the salaries of Muscovite women, and in the Moscow City Council 43% of women.

The only region where there are more women than men in the local parliament is the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. The authors of the study explain the low participation of Russian women in politics by the patriarchal attitudes of both society as a whole and leaders of some regions.

In comparison with other countries in 2021, Russia took 81st place among 156 countries. At that time, the country’s backwardness was explained by a large gap in salaries and a very low level of participation of Russian women in politics. This is the most recent data: in subsequent years, the World Economic Forum did not include Russia in its rating.
