North Korea on Saturday launched a long-range ballistic missile towards the Sea of Japan. This happened the day after Pyongyang warned of a “decisive response” to planned military exercises by the US and South Korea. The launch of the missile was reported by CNN and Reuters.
Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida said that the missile fell in the waters of the exclusive economic zone of Japan, to the west of the island of Hokkaido. According to Japanese officials, the missile flew for 60 minutes.
Last year, North Korea launched an unprecedented number of missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, which are said to be capable of reaching the mainland of the United States. In addition, North Korea resumed preparations for its first nuclear test since 2017.
North Korea’s programs to develop ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons are prohibited by UN Security Council resolutions. However, Pyongyang claims that the development of weapons is necessary to counteract the “hostile policy” of Washington and its allies.
- At the end of January, the US and South Korean defense ministers agreed to expand the program of joint military exercises. The parties also plan to expand the American presence in the region and deliver F-22, F-35 fighters and aircraft carriers with nuclear engines there.
