Today is the 17th anniversary of the murder of Novaya Gazeta journalist Anna Politkovskaya. On October 7, 2006, she was shot in the entrance of her home on Lesnaya Street in Moscow.
Anna Politkovskaya repeatedly traveled to the areas of hostilities, many of the journalist’s reports were devoted to human rights violations in Chechnya. Politkovskaya openly criticized the current government and President Vladimir Putin personally.
As “Mediazona” reports, on the day of the journalist’s murder, actions in memory of the journalist were held in Kazan, Saratov, Kirov, Moscow and St. Petersburg.
About 20 residents of Kazan laid flowers at the monument to the victims of political repression. Andrey Kalashnikov from Saratov came out on a single picket with small posters, one of them read “Anna Politkovskaya, journalist, human rights defender. Killed in the entrance of her own home”, and the second read “Freedom of political prisoners of Russia”.
In the morning, flowers are brought to Politkovskaya’s house in Moscow, where she was killed, and to the office building of Novaya Gazeta. They were also brought to the Solovetsky stone in St. Petersburg, reports Sever.Realii.
Ethiopian journalist Lucy Kassa received the Anna Politkovskaya Reach All Women in WAR (RAW in WAR) award, which is given to women defenders of human rights in wars and conflicts, Novaya Gazeta. Evropa reports.
In June 2014, the Moscow City Court sentenced two natives of Chechnya, Rustam Makhmudov and Lom-Ala Haytukayev, to life imprisonment, who were found by the jury to be the executor and organizer of Politkovskaya’s murder. Haytukaev later died in the colony. Former police officer Sergey Khadzhikurbanov was found to be an intermediary in the crime and received 20 years in prison. The brothers of the alleged perpetrator of the murder are those who followed Politkovskaya Ibrahim and Jabrail Mahmudov – sentenced to 12 and 14 years, respectively.
In the case of Politkovskaya’s murder, Dmitry Pavlyuchenkov, a former employee of the Moscow militia, was also sentenced to 11 years in prison, who pleaded guilty to organizing surveillance on the journalist.
However, Politkovskaya’s colleagues and relatives believe that the case was not solved in fact – the motives of the criminals are not clear, and it has not been established who was the customer.
