Oleg Khorzhan, the leader of the Transnistrian Communist Party and the Union of Opposition Forces, was found dead in unrecognized Transnistria. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the unrecognized republic, the body was discovered by Horzhan’s wife next to an open and empty safe. The agency points to the presence of signs of violent death.
Horzhan’s party colleague told the Moldovan service of Radio Liberty that the politician was found dead in his home office near Tiraspol with multiple stab wounds. On the other hand, the Moldovan police announced that Horzhan was found “shot dead” in his own house in the village of Sukleia, and that a murder case was being investigated.
The head of the CPRF, Gennady Zyuganov, commented on the incident: “Tonight, our comrade, the head of the Transnistrian Communist Party, Oleg Khorzhan, died. We need to immediately start an investigation and find out.”
- 47-year-old Oleg Khorzhan has been the head of the Transnistrian Communist Party since 2003. He accused the authorities of the region of “puppet accuracy” and demanded an increase in Russia’s political and economic presence in Transnistria.
- In 2018, he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison on charges of insulting a representative of the government and using violence. Khorzhan was released last December.
