The National Commission for State Regulation in the Fields of Energy and Utilities (NKREKP) has made a final decision on the certification of the Naftogaz Group company ‒ JSC “Ukrtransgaz” ‒ in accordance with European rules regarding the safety of gas supply.

Ukrtransgaz became the second gas storage operator in Europe that successfully passed certification and confirmed its right to carry out gas storage activities in accordance with the updated rules in the European Union and the Energy Community.

“This is a strategically important decision for the Gas Storage Operator – Ukrtransgaz. In fact, its certification is another step towards strengthening the energy sustainability of both Ukraine and the EU. I am sincerely grateful to everyone who participated in this process from the registration and voting of the bill in the Verkhovna Rada to its adoption by the Regulator of the final decision on certification. I am also very grateful to the specialists of Ukrtransgaz, whose dedicated work made the certification possible,” – Oleksiy Chernyshov, head of the Naftogaz Group, noted.

The certification of Ukrtransgaz gives the right, if necessary, to involve Ukrainian gas storage facilities for the implementation of energy security measures in Europe, which are provided for by the EU Regulation on the security of gas supply. In particular, it refers to the storage of gas reserves of foreign customers, as well as reserves of countries that do not have gas storage facilities or volumes of gas that are jointly purchased by countries in case of crisis situations.

“In this way, the certification will enable us to develop new partnerships and, accordingly, contribute to strengthening the energy security of Ukraine and the EU,” ‒ added t.v.o. General Director of JSC “Ukrtransgaz” Roman Malyutin.

We remind you that the procedure for mandatory certification of gas storage operators was introduced in the EU from July 1, 2022. Its main goal is to counter Russia’s use of gas storage facilities under its control on the territory of Europe for blackmailing other countries. In addition, it should prevent the recurrence of cases when the volumes of gas in gas storages were insufficient for the proper passage of the autumn-winter period.
