St. Petersburg municipal deputies appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to release the artist Sasha Skochylenko, “Bumaga” reports.
In their appeal, the deputies indicated that Skochylenko does not represent “any threat to the Russian state”. They explained the artist’s actions as a “protective reaction of her psyche” due to “an extremely high level of empathy.” The deputies demanded that Skochylenko drop all charges and release her from custody.
According to Bumagy, 25 people from 17 municipal districts of the city signed the application.
- Sasha Skochylenko is a St. Petersburg artist, the author of comics about life with depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. Since April 2022, she has been in a pre-trial detention center for an article about fakes about the Russian army. Skochylenko is accused of replacing price tags in a supermarket with leaflets with information about the actions of Russian soldiers in Ukraine. For this, she faces up to ten years in prison.
