PMC “Wagner” asked to purchase weapons from Turkey

On Saturday, there was a new leak of secret Pentagon and CIA documents concerning the defense capabilities of Ukraine and Russia. The documents also demonstrate the scale of surveillance by American intelligence services on both countries. The leak is analyzed by the American newspapers The New York Times and Washington Post.
The documents, in particular, state that at the beginning of February, representatives of PMC “Wagner” held negotiations with Turkey regarding the purchase of weapons for military operations in Ukraine and Mali. It is not known whether the parties reached an agreement. However, if Turkey, being a member of NATO, conducts negotiations behind the alliance’s back on the supply of weapons to the Russian armed forces, this may be a big blow to its reputation, the Washington Post notes.
The documents also consider the position of China in relation to the war in Ukraine. The CIA report claims that Beijing can bet on Ukrainian sabotage on the territory of Russia in order to recognize NATO as an aggressor and increase its support for Russia. So far, the United States and EU countries do not have data on the supply of lethal weapons by China to the Kremlin, but in the event that Ukraine, using NATO weapons, starts sabotage in the depths of Russia, Beijing can start such supplies, according to intelligence reports.
Documents related to Iran’s nuclear program and North Korea’s missile tests have also become publicly available.
The source of the leak has not yet been determined. The released documents were intended for senior US officials, including the commander of the armed forces, General Mark Milla. In addition to specific information, the documents reflect the extent of awareness of American special services about the actions and plans of other countries. The New York Times notes that the United States has a clearer idea of Russian military operations than of Ukrainian plans.
Journalists also note that leaks of this kind have already complicated US relations with allies and “raised doubts about America’s ability to keep its secrets.” The leak could potentially harm Ukraine’s military efforts if it helps Moscow block sources of information.
On Friday, senior Pentagon officials restricted access to intelligence, two sources told the Washington Post. One of them described the introduced measures as unusually strict and suggested that this “testifies to panic among the leadership of the Pentagon.”
The US Department of Justice said it had opened an investigation into the leak.
