Putin approved the new division of Russia into five military districts

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed a decree on the military-administrative division of the country. He establishes new borders of military districts. In particular, the Leningrad and Moscow military districts were re-created by presidential decree. They existed before – until 2010, when they were combined into the Western Military District.
According to the decree, the Southern Military District now includes the Russian-controlled lands of eastern Ukraine, the annexation of which was announced by the Russian authorities in September 2022. These are parts of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. The annexed Krym also belongs to the Southern District.
According to the new decree, there will be five military districts in Russia: Moscow, Leningrad, Central, Southern and Eastern.
As RBC clarifies, in December 2022, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu made a proposal to re-divide the Moscow and Leningrad Military Districts. Then he mentioned the need to strengthen the military potential in the north-west of Russia in response to the desire of Finland and Sweden to join NATO and, in general, to the growth of NATO’s military presence in Northern Europe.
