Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday accused Russia of committing war crimes. His statement followed the shelling by Russian troops of the Ukrainian trading port of Izmail on the Danube River at the border with Romania. As a result of shelling, the port and industrial infrastructure suffered.
The city and port of Izmail is located in the Odessa region on the left bank of the Danube. The opposite shore is already the territory of Romania.
On the night of August 2, Russian troops attacked Izmail with kamikaze drones. The General Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine confirmed that as a result of the attack in the port, the elevator, grain hangars, tanks of one of the cargo terminals, production, storage and administrative premises, as well as the building of the sea station were damaged. The port stopped working. The Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Oleksandr Kubrakov said that 40 thousand tons of grain ready for shipment were damaged.
Reuters reports that after the Russian shelling of Izmail, world wheat prices rose by 5% according to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. At the mouth of the Danube, after the attack on Izmail, ships have accumulated, which are still afraid of entering Ukrainian ports on this river.
Russian state media claim that military equipment was based in the port of Izmail and foreign military personnel were stationed there.
