The head of the Roscosmos corporation Yury Borisov named the cause of the crash of the interplanetary station “Luna-25”. According to him, the accident occurred due to abnormal engine operation. After switching to the landing mode, it worked for 127 seconds instead of the prescribed 84. As a result, the spacecraft could not slow down in time and crashed into the lunar surface.
Borisov said that an interdepartmental commission has already been formed, which is investigating the causes of the accident in detail. Her conclusions will be taken into account in further developments.
- The Luna-25 interplanetary space station was launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Amur Region on August 11. It was the first launch of a mission to the moon in modern Russian history. The automatic station was supposed to conduct long-term research on the lunar surface.
- On Saturday, August 19, Roscosmos announced an emergency situation on board the station. On Sunday, the agency reported that the station had been out of communication for more than a day and, according to preliminary information, had left the calculated orbit and crashed into the surface of the Earth’s satellite.
