Rostelecom may be testing a YouTube blocking program

Russian Internet regulator Rostelecom may be testing a program to filter YouTube content in Russia. According to the profile channel “ZaTelecom”, he discovered a letter that Rostelecom sent to its employees. In it, employees were offered to test a service for viewing YouTube, which will be able to block videos deemed undesirable.
This service, located at the address ytonline.ru, is not available now, but it was still possible to access it on Friday to watch YouTube videos through it. According to Mikhail Klymarev, the author of the channel and director of the Internet Protection Society, the service is similar to an online filter that will “decide” which videos it will grant access to and which it will block.
Klimaryov explained the ytonline.ru device as follows: “Direct access to YouTube will be blocked, but it will be possible to watch videos from it through the “pad” – this is the portal of Rostelecom. It’s not all: cats and cooking – please, but seditious content from the point of view of the state will not miss”.
Two more IT experts who spoke to the publication “We can explain” agree with Klymarev’s opinion.
- In recent weeks, Roskomnadzor intensified the fight against VPN services, with the help of which Russians bypass the blocking of websites: since August, a wave of failures in their work has been observed. The department explained the request for VPN blocking by concern for personal data of citizens.
