Russian tennis player Vera Zvonareva was not allowed to enter Poland for the WTA tournament in Warsaw.

According to the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs, Zvonareva tried to enter on a French visa. The athlete flew to Warsaw from Belgrade. After arriving from Serbia, the tennis player stayed in the transit zone of the airport, and then flew to Podgorica, the department said in a statement.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs clarified that the Russian woman is included in the list of persons whose stay on the territory of Poland is undesirable, and the border guards did not admit her for reasons of safety and public order.

The tournament in Warsaw takes place from July 24 to 30. Zvonareva was the only Russian tennis player entered in the main draw.

  • In April, the Russian tennis player Vitalya Dyachenko was not allowed to board the flight of the Polish airline LOT from Cairo to Nice with a transfer in Warsaw, she was refused registration. According to Dyachenko, the reason for the refusal was her Russian passport.
  • After the full-scale invasion of Russian troops on the territory of Ukraine, a number of international sports federations suspended national and club Russian teams from participating in their tournaments. In particular, the football and hockey teams were sanctioned.
  • For Russian tennis players competing in individual competitions, no restrictions have been introduced at the moment.
