The current mayor of Moscow, Sergey Sobyanin, will run for a new term. His candidacy was nominated by the United Russia party. The next election of the mayor of the capital will be held from September 8 to 10. Muscovites will also be able to vote in electronic format.
Sobyanin confirmed his decision and thanked “United Russia” for the trust shown. He said that the decision “is not easy and very responsible. We are going through a difficult period in our history. And we need to direct all our experience, knowledge, and strength to overcome difficulties with dignity and emerge victorious.”
Sergey Sobyanin’s competitors in the pre-election race have not yet been reported. The Chairman of the Moscow City Duma, Alexey Shaposhnikov, when asked whether he considered the upcoming elections to be competitive, replied that he considered them open and fair, but not competitive, “since Sergey Semenovich cannot have competitors.”
Sergey Sobyanin has been the mayor of Moscow since 2010. Previously, he participated in the elections of the head of the city as a self-nominated candidate.
