The FSB reported on the detention of a former defense plant employee

The Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) reported on the detention of a former employee of the Omsk defense enterprise in the case of treason. According to the intelligence service, he engaged in espionage in the interests of Germany in exchange for obtaining German citizenship.

Since the beginning of 2023, at least 20 criminal cases have been opened in Russia under the article on treason. This is five times more than in the same period last year. For the whole of 2022, 22 criminal cases of state treason were initiated.

According to open data, the number of criminal cases increased sharply in March – nine of them were initiated in a month. Residents of the Far East became extras in almost half of all cases. Detainees were reported in Khabarovsk, Primorsky Krai and Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

  • In April, the State Duma of Russia in three readings adopted amendments introducing life imprisonment for treason.
  • Cases of high treason are almost always marked “secretly”, and the defenders are under a non-disclosure agreement, so information about the essence of the accusation becomes known only in isolated cases.
  • “Gosizmena” is among the charges against opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison on April 17.
  • Last September, former Kommersant journalist Ivan Safronov was sentenced to 22 years. He does not admit guilt. Many of his colleagues and human rights defenders consider the sentence to be revenge for professional activity.
