Spontaneous anti-war memorials appear in Russian cities on the anniversary of the start of the war with Ukraine.
In Moscow, residents of the city, some with children, lay flowers at the monument to Lesa Ukrainka. The police are on duty nearby, but they are not active. The police asked the janitor to remove the bouquets, but Muscovites who came to the monument put new ones.
On Pushkinskaya Square in the center of the Russian capital, police selectively check passers-by.
In the Leningrad region, businessman Dmytro Skurikhin, known for painting the walls of his store with protest slogans, held a single picket with a “Sorry, Ukraine” poster. Skurykhin is undergoing a criminal case under the article on the so-called discrediting of the Russian army.
In Kazan, a spontaneous memorial appeared at the monument to the victims of political repressions in Leninsky Garden. Photos from Bucha, Mariupol, Dnipro, as well as a poster “No Putin’s War” are installed there.
In Yekaterinburg, activists of “Youth Yablok” who had previously gathered to hold an anti-war rally at the “Masks of Sorrow” monument to victims of political repressions were detained. The road there has been blocked by the police since morning.
Flowers tied with a yellow-blue ribbon and a sign with the inscription “Dnipro 14.01.2023 Ukraine from 02.24.2022” were placed at the Pilgrimage Cross on Kashtake in Tomsk. Police officers are on duty at places where local residents may come with actions, but mass arrests have not yet been reported.
Anti-war memorials also appeared in Novosibirsk near the monument to Taras Shevchenko and Murmansk. The townspeople brought flowers and children’s toys there.
