The management of the Russian mapping service 2GIS asked employees to collect data on institutions for LGBT people. This was reported by “Vazhney istorii” with reference to a company employee.
The publication publishes a screenshot of the working correspondence of 2GIS. In the message, employees are reminded that the Supreme Court has recognized the “LGBT movement” as extremist and has banned it in Russia, and they ask to check the information presented in the company’s products.
“In our product, a similar kind of establishment could be presented (perhaps not in an explicit form). <…> As a rule, they are presented in the headings “Nightclubs”, “Bars”. While our lawyers are figuring out how to properly deal with the establishment’s cards, you can record their names in the register,” says the management’s letter to employees.
Employees of 2GIS were also asked to check the cards of establishments and send complaints to gay clubs if there are compromising photos or reviews.
- 2GIS is a cartographic service founded in 1999 in Novosibirsk. Since 2020, 75% of the company’s shares belong to Sberbank of Russia.
- On November 30, the Supreme Court of Russia recognized the non-existent “international LGBT movement” as extremist and banned its activities in Russia.
- Since the “international public LGBT movement” does not exist, it is not clear which organizations and exactly how the ban on its activities will be affected. Some lawyers did not rule out risks for specialized human rights organizations and visitors to LGBT clubs.
