The Slavic District Court of the Krasnodar Territory fined Archbishop Viktor Pivovarov of the Russian Orthodox Church 150,000 rubles. The court found him guilty of repeatedly discrediting the Russian army. In his article, published in the blog “Christianity Today”, the priest called the war in Ukraine evil, and the Russian soldiers – the likeness of Satan.

86-year-old Pivovarov was tried again under the article about “discrediting the army”. In March 2023, he was already fined 40 thousand rubles under the same article because of a sermon in which he condemned the war. In the autumn of the same year, the church in Slavyansk-na-Kubany, where Pivovarov served, was searched. As “OVD-Info” reports, during the search, the law enforcement officers were rude and threatened the priest and his assistant.

On the website of the Russian Orthodox Church, it is indicated that part of the fine will be paid from the funds seized during the search, and the missing amount will be collected by the parishioners.

  • The Russian Orthodox Church (RosPC) is not officially recognized and is in opposition to the Russian Orthodox Church (RPS) and the Moscow Patriarchate. Victor Pyvovarov headed a small parish in the Holy Intercession-Tikhonovsky Church of the Russian Orthodox Church in Slavyansk-na-Kubany.
