Mathematician Azat Myftakhov, who is serving a sentence for hooliganism for political reasons (human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner), was included in the register of terrorists and extremists of Rosfinmonitoring. He was added there with an asterisk, that is, on suspicion of a crime of terrorist orientation.

“Sota” edition notes that the article on hooliganism, for which the mathematician was convicted, does not suggest such measures. However, in February, a number of sources reported that a new criminal case related to the “Networks” case was being initiated against Myftakhov.

The FSB initiated a criminal case against the so-called terrorist community “Network” in October 2017. According to it, 11 people from Penza, St. Petersburg, and Moscow were detained and then arrested, most of them anarchists and anti-fascists. According to the investigation, young people created an online community with the goal of committing acts of terrorism and overthrowing the government. Most of the accused claimed that the case materials were fabricated by the FSB, and repeatedly stated that they had given confessions under torture.

In St. Petersburg, as Sever.Realii reminds, Yulian Boyarshinov and Viktor Filinkov were on trial in a criminal case. Filinkov was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment, Boyarshinov – to 5.5 years in a colony, but later the term was reduced by 3 months. Yulian was recently released and left Russia.
  • Azat Miftakhov, a graduate student of mechmat engineering at Moscow State University, was detained on February 1, 2019, on suspicion of illegal manufacture of explosives. According to him, he was demanded to testify under torture. Later, members of the Public Monitoring Commission confirmed the fact of the use of violence.
  • Myftakhov was released, but immediately arrested on a second criminal case – about “hooliganism, committed according to a preliminary conspiracy motivated by political hatred.” According to the investigation, in January 2018, a graduate student of Moscow State University and his associates, who adhere to anarchist views, broke the window of the United Russia office in the Khovrino district of Moscow and threw a smoke bomb into the room. At the same time, there was no one in the office.
  • In January 2021, Myftakhov was sentenced to six years in a general regime colony. Taking into account the detention in the pre-trial detention center, the mathematician should be released at the end of 2023. His relatives, however, fear that they may prepare a new criminal case against him.
