The Mariy El Supreme Court liquidated the oldest human rights organization in the region, “Man and the Law”. This is reported in the Telegram channel of the organization. Human rights activists intend to appeal this decision.
The Ministry of Justice filed a lawsuit to liquidate the organization in January. During an unscheduled inspection of the organization, the department found that its activities were of a “political nature”. Human rights defenders tried to appeal the act of inspection, but the court stopped consideration of their appeal. After that, the Ministry of Justice brought the findings of the inspection report into a lawsuit demanding the liquidation of the organization.
This is not the first attempt to liquidate “Man and the Law”. Previously, such a request was made in 2020. At that time, the court did not liquidate the organization, it recognized the violations revealed during the 2019 inspection as not exceeding the scope of the law.
“Man and Law” has existed since 1999. She provides legal assistance to citizens whose rights have been violated by law enforcement agencies in Mary El and their employees. After the courts in Russia refused to give a fair decision, the victims’ complaints were evaluated by the European Court of Human Rights. In 2014, “Man and the Law” was entered by the Ministry of Justice in the register of foreign agents.
