The disaster at the Kakhovskaya HPP caused damage of more than 1.5 billion euros

The disaster at the Kakhovskaya HPP has already caused damage of more than one and a half billion euros. This was announced by the head of the Kherson regional administration, Alexander Prokudin. The amount was announced at an outdoor meeting of the Verkhovna Rada on environmental policy and nature protection.

According to Prokudin, at the moment, about 55 thousand hectares of forest have been flooded. The water that became unusable would be enough to water the entire world for two days.

The Ukrainian authorities are constantly monitoring both the state of the water and the epidemiological situation in the flooded regions. Efforts are being made to evacuate residents and provide clean drinking water to those who remain in the disaster zone. New artesian wells are being drilled as a matter of urgency, Prokudin said.

One of the important issues is the containment of prices for sold drinking water. “No one has the right to profit from someone else’s grief,” the head of the administration said.

Due to the uncontrolled release of water from the reservoir, settlements on both banks of the Dnieper began to flood. The authorities of Ukraine and Russia accuse each other of undermining the dam. In addition, there is a version that the cause of the disaster was the previous damage to the station.
• 600 square kilometers of the Kherson region were under water, of which about 30% is the right-bank part, the rest is the left bank controlled by Russia. More than 50 settlements were completely or partially flooded on both banks of the Dnieper.
• Environmentalists warn that, in addition to household waste and sewage waste, a lot of harmful substances got into the water of the flooded Kherson region. The water washed away cemeteries and cattle graves. Gasoline and diesel fuel from washed-out gas stations, engine oil and fuel oil from the destroyed engine room of the Kakhovskaya HPP, toxic industrial waste accumulated at the bottom of the Dnieper, and corpses of dead animals got into it. All this can lead to an ecological disaster in the near future.
