The bill of the Ministry of Defense on raising the age of demobilization has disappeared from the official Russian Internet portal of legal acts. Kommersant newspaper drew attention to this. Now when trying to find a bill on the site, the inscription “The project has been deleted. The page you are requesting does not exist.”
The document was published on February 8. In it, the Ministry of Defense proposed to establish a single maximum age for military service during the period of mobilization, martial law or during wartime – 70 years for senior officers and 65 years – for all other military personnel.
The Ministry of Defense explained the need for such a law by the fact that now for those who concluded contracts until June 24, 2023, the maximum length of service is not prescribed. In the introductory note to the project, it was stated that it is possible to “ensure the necessary level of manning of the armed forces of Russia.”
- In November 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with Russian bloggers and media workers writing about the war in Ukraine, stated that volunteers and contractors participating in hostilities on the territory of Ukraine will not return home until their end, regardless of the fact that for what period did they conclude contracts with the Ministry of Defense or when were they mobilized.
- Thus, if the new draft law is adopted, theoretically, if the decree on mobilization is not canceled, those who have concluded a contract or are mobilized can remain in the army until they reach the age of 65 without the right to retire.
