The Court of the European Union decided to annul the decision according to which the former Formula 1 driver Nikita Mazepin was included in the sanctions list.

According to the court’s decision, family ties with the father of the former racer, Russian businessman Dmitry Mazepin, are insufficient grounds for him to be considered related to his father by common interests. Billionaire Dmitry Mazepin is the founder of the company “Uralkhim”.

Nikita Mazepin was included in the sanctions list of the European Union in March 2022. The decision was based on his connections with his father, a businessman who works in sectors of the economy that provide a significant source of income for the Russian government.

According to the EU Council, Dmitry Mazepin was the main sponsor of his son’s activities as a driver for the Haas team in Formula 1. The title sponsor of the team was the Uralkali company, whose co-owner was Dmitry Mazepin.

The court came to the conclusion that the EU Council did not prove the connection between the racer and his father from the point of view of economy, capital or the presence of common interests at the time of inclusion in the sanctions lists. It is also noted that from March 2022, Mazepin is no longer a driver for the Haas team.
