In Moscow, employees of the “E” Center detained the editor-in-chief of “Novaya Gazeta” Sergey Sokolov. This was reported by the publication itself.

As stated in the “New” telegram channel, Sokolov was taken to the police to draw up an administrative report on the “discrediting” of the Russian army.

An examination conducted by the radio frequency center is attached to the administrative case materials. The case concerns one of the publications of Novaya Gazeta. The case will be considered by the Perovsk court, but the exact time is still unknown, the publication notes.

Sergey Sokolov for many years headed the investigative department of Novaya. He began to perform the duties of the editor-in-chief in September 2023, after Dmitry Muratov resigned from his position due to the status of “foreign agent”. In November, the staff of the newspaper elected Sokolov to the post of editor-in-chief.

  • Novaya Gazeta, which has been published in Russia since 1993, suspended its publication in March 2022, shortly after the start of Russia’s full-scale military invasion of Ukraine and the introduction of new laws on fines, arrests and prison terms, which many regarded as military censorship. After that, some of the journalists left the country and launched the publication “Novaya gazeta Evropa” with an editorial office in Riga. On February 7 of last year, the Moscow City Court revoked Novaya Gazeta’s mass media license.
