The European Union introduced sanctions against five people for destabilizing the situation in Moldova. This is stated in the official journal of the EU.
Ihor Chaika, the son of the former Prosecutor General of Russia Yuri Chaika, was included in the list. The document states that he is responsible for financing “FSB projects aimed at destabilizing Moldova” and also supported actions “threatening the sovereignty and independence of Moldova.”
Also, the leader of the pro-Russian party “Shor” Ilan Shor, his deputy Maryna Tauber, the leader of the party “Building Europe at Home” Georgy Kavkalyuk, as well as the Moldovan oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuk were also sanctioned.
“The Union remains steadfast in its support for the Republic of Moldova and its resilience, security, stability, economy and energy supply in the face of destabilizing activities of external actors,” the document says.
- In October 2022, the United States imposed sanctions against Ihor Chaika for attempting to interfere in the internal affairs of Moldova. It was claimed that Chaika, together with the press secretary of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, developed plans to undermine the power of the president of Moldova and return the country to the Russian sphere of influence. An important role in these plans was allegedly assigned to the party “Shor” and supporters of the former president of Moldova Ihor Dodon.
- In April 2023, a court in Moldova sentenced oligarch Ilan Shor in absentia to 15 years in prison on charges of fraud and money laundering. The investigative bodies established that Shor is one of the main participants and beneficiaries of the theft of a billion dollars from the banking system of Moldova in 2014. Shor was a shareholder of two banks in Moldova, which were later liquidated. The fugitive oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuk also figures among the accomplices of the largest robbery in the history of Moldova.
