A court in St. Petersburg sentenced four policemen Alexander Astafiev, Viktor Orlov, Alexander Yakovlev, and Alexey Belyakov to life imprisonment, who extorted money from detainees, threatening them with criminal prosecution. The press service of the city’s courts reports.
In April 2020, Belyakov, Astafyev, Yakovlev and Orlov stopped a local resident on Voroshilova Street, whom they suspected of committing a drug-related crime. The police demanded 150,000 rubles from her, threatening to inform her employer that she was taking drugs and committing crimes. The detainee refused to transfer the money, then the policemen put her in an official car and drove her around the city, threatening her. As a result, the resident agreed and transferred 150 thousand rubles. According to the press service, in the case there are several more victims who were extorted money according to a similar scheme, but their number is not mentioned.
The police admitted their guilt. The court sentenced Astafyev, Orlova and Yakovlev to 4.4 years in a general regime colony, and Belyakov to 4.3 years. All of them are deprived of the title and the right to hold government positions after serving the sentence for 2.5 years.
