The European Union is working to give member states the ability to effectively ban imports of Russian liquefied natural gas without introducing new energy sanctions.

Energy ministers of the EU member states are ready to approve a proposal that will give the governments of the member states the opportunity to temporarily prohibit Russian exporters from reserving the infrastructure capacity necessary for deliveries.
Although individual countries will need additional consultations before using such a mechanism, in particular with other EU countries and the European Commission, it can help reduce energy imports from Russia.
Approval is expected to come as part of a wider meeting of ministers on Tuesday in Brussels.
The proposed regulation will require the approval of the European Parliament, which previously proposed its own solutions to reduce Russian gas imports. Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Estonia are in favor of giving EU member states new powers to block imports.
Earlier this month, the head of the EU’s energy agency, Kadri Simson, called for an end to Russian LNG supplies, saying companies should not extend long-term contracts after current ones expire.
In particular, Spain, the largest buyer of Russian LNG in the EU this year, asked companies not to sign new contracts for the purchase of gas in Russia.
