The European Commission announced the first tender for the collective purchase of natural gas as part of efforts to diversify the supply of this energy resource by establishing contacts with reliable suppliers other than the Russian Federation. This was stated by the Vice President of the European Commission, Marosh Shefchovych, Ukrinform reports.

The first international tender
“Today, the European Commission launched the first international tender for the joint purchase of gas within the framework of the EU Energy Platform. This is a historic milestone: for the first time, we are using the purchasing power of the EU to increase our energy security and solve the problem of high gas prices,” said a representative of the European Commission.
According to him, the market response was positive and encouraging. About 107 companies have signed up to participate in the joint purchase of gas through the newly created AggregateEU mechanism, more companies are in the process (joining).
Shefchovych noted that within the framework of this tender, 77 European companies ordered a total gas purchase of 11.6 billion cubic meters. The declared demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is approximately 2.8 billion cubic meters, and almost 9.6 billion cubic meters of gas are expected to be delivered through pipelines.
The vice-president of the European Commission invited “all reliable international suppliers to participate and present their proposals that will serve European consumers.”
Applications for participation in the tender will be accepted until May 15, and deliveries of purchased gas must take place in the period from June 2023 to May 2024.

After the start of full-scale military aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, Russia cut gas supplies to the EU by 80%. Such actions of the Russian Federation prompted the European Commission and the EU countries to look for ways to ensure their own energy security and reduce dependence on Russian energy sources.
The gas deficit was compensated by measures in three directions: reduction of gas consumption volumes, diversification of gas supply routes, and investments in the development of “green” energy.
