The status of temporary protection in the European Union was granted to four million citizens of Ukraine who left after the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia in February 2022.
European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ilva Johansson said this in Kyiv, as reported by “European Truth”.
“I informed the Minister of Internal Affairs (Ihor Klymenko – ed.) about the current placement of four million Ukrainians who are currently in the EU under the auspices of the Directive on Temporary Protection,” she said.
The European Commissioner added that almost 700,000 of these Ukrainians have jobs, and another 450,000 children are currently studying in schools and universities across the EU.
“Of course, it’s a challenge, but we coped with it. I repeat that Ukrainians who need asylum in the EU are always welcome,” Johansson stressed.
As you know, in March 2022, the EU introduced the issuance of temporary protection permits for citizens of Ukraine who left as a result of the full-scale military invasion of Russia. This status means that Ukrainians fleeing the war do not need to apply for asylum in the EU.
The European Commission previously reported that is ready to take the necessary measures for the further extension of the Directive on temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees, if necessary, until 2025.
European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ilva Johansson arrived in Kyiv. During her visit to Ukraine visited Irpinand also discussed the cooperation of law enforcement officers, prevention of arms smuggling, work on the investigation of war crimes, support for demining territories where hostilities took place.
