The prosecutor’s office of the Novosibirsk region has tightened the charges against the former director of the theater “Red Torch” Alexander Kulyabin.
According to the publication “Sibirsky Express”, in the approved indictment in the criminal case against Kulyabin, in addition to the previously brought charge of embezzlement on a large scale with the use of an official position, the investigation also accuses him of exceeding official powers with serious consequences. The maximum term of punishment under these articles is ten years of imprisonment.
In January 2023, Alexander Kulyabin was sent under house arrest in connection with the embezzlement of 1.8 million rubles. The investigation claimed that he, as a director, illegally paid allowances to the salary of his son, the chief director of the theater Timofey Kulyabin. Kulyabin Sr. reimbursed the budget of the Novosibirsk region for possible damage.
In December 2022, Alexander Kulyabin was dismissed from the post of director of the state theater “Red Torch”, which he held for 23 years.
Timofey Kulyabin is one of the famous theater directors in Russia. His performances “Three Sisters”, “Onegin” and “Children of the Sun” received the main theater prize of the country “Golden Mask”.
After the start of the war in Ukraine, he left Russia and repeatedly published anti-war posts on Instagram. The theater canceled the showings of its performances.
