The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) was the organizer of an explosion in the Moscow region in August of last year, which killed the daughter of the Russian radical philosopher, a supporter of the invasion of Ukraine, Oleksandr Dugin Darya. This is confirmed by the newspaper The Washington Post with reference to sources in Ukraine in a large article devoted to the secret operations of the Ukrainian special services and their cooperation with the US special services, including the CIA.

As stated in the article, the target of the attempt was Alexander Dugin himself, whose daughter died by accident. Ukrainian interlocutors of the publication, however, do not consider her an innocent victim, noting that she also openly supported the war.

It is confirmed that the components of the explosive device were brought to Russia in a cat carrier in the luggage of Ukrainian refugee Natalya Vovk, who entered the country with her 12-year-old daughter. Vovk’s name appeared in reports of Russian investigative bodies about the Dugina case. The article does not say whether she was directly involved in the explosion. The sources also did not report where she is now – she managed to leave Russia shortly after the death of Dugina.

Among the other operations of the SBU, as well as the second Ukrainian special service, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense (GUR), which are mentioned in the article, are two attacks on the Crimean bridge, attacks on Russian warships and a drone attack on the Kremlin. The Ukrainian authorities sometimes directly, sometimes with hints, declared their involvement in these operations. The organization of Dugina’s murder in Kiev was officially denied.

The material also claims that special units of the SBU, which, among other things, carried out operations on the territory of Russia, were created in cooperation with the CIA since 2015. It is claimed that American special services have spent tens of millions of dollars on reforming the SBU and GUR and participated in the training of Ukrainian special services employees.

The interlocutors of the publication from the number of American officials, while recognizing the close cooperation of the CIA with the SBU, deny that the American special services in any way participated in the preparation and implementation of operations aimed at killing Russian citizens. In addition to the explosion that killed Dugina, they include, for example, the murder of blogger Vladlen Tatarsky in St. Petersburg or the former commander of the Russian submarine Stanislav Rzytsky in Krasnodar. As stated in the article, the “passion” of the Ukrainian special services for operations aimed at killing Russians who are not directly participating in hostilities complicated the interaction of the CIA with them. It is noted, in particular, that, according to a number of American officials, the expansion of such operations may create more risks for Ukraine than bring benefits.

Officially, representatives of the CIA and the Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on the publication. The head of the SBU, Vasyl Malyuk, only stated in a comment for the Washington Post that all the targets against which the service conducted operations were “completely legitimate.”
