The winners of the Aachen Peace Prize were the Russian movement Feminist Anti-War Resistance (FAS) and the Israeli Human Rights Defenders Foundation.
“Feminist anti-war resistance” opposes war, patriarchy, authoritarianism and militarism, according to the prize’s website. “Furthermore, FAS fights against extremely conservative ideas about gender and the family prevailing in Russia, as well as discrimination and repression against the LGBTQ community,” the press release said.
Last December, the Ministry of Justice of Russia included the organization in the register of so-called foreign agents. “Since then, activists have been detained, prosecuted, imprisoned either in psychiatric hospitals or in prison,” the award’s website says.
The Israeli “Human Rights Defenders Foundation” provides legal advice to Israeli and Palestinian human rights defenders who participate in nonviolent protests against the expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank. The fund also helps those who fight for the rights of the Bedouins in the Negev desert in the south of Israel, for the rights of LGBT+ and the rights of Israelis of Ethiopian origin who face police brutality and racism.
- The Aachen Peace Prize is an international award that has been awarded since 1988 for initiatives promoting peace and mutual understanding. The ceremony will traditionally be held on the World Day of Peace, September 1, in the German city of Aachen.
