The FSB opened a criminal case under the article of treason against the lawyer Ilya Novikov. This is reported by the Russian mass media with reference to the FSB.
According to the statements of the special service, treason in Novikov’s actions resulted in “switching over to the side of the enemy.” As the FSB said, he “joined the ranks of the Territorial Defense Forces of Ukraine and is currently participating in their activities.”
The charges were brought in absentia, since Novikov does not live in Russia.
Ilya Novikov, in the past also a player of the TV quiz show “What? Gde? When?”, spoke in recent years among Ukrainian citizens who were persecuted in Russia, in particular Oleg Sentsov and Crimean Tatar activists. He also made strongly anti-Kremlin statements. Even before Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, he moved to Kyiv.
In June 2022, the Moscow Chamber of Advocates left Novikov’s status, at the end of November the Ministry of Justice entered Novikov in the register of “foreign agents”, and then it became known that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia declared him wanted. The article was not called then.
