The upcoming BRICS summit will be held in Johannesburg in face-to-face format. The heads of all five countries – Russia, South Africa, India, China and Brazil – will participate in it. This was announced by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Eyewitness News radio station reports.
In turn, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov, commenting on Ramaphosa’s statement, said that the format of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s participation in the summit has not yet been determined.
However, in an interview with the Mail & Guardian newspaper, South African Vice President Paul Mashatile noted that Russia rejected the South African president’s request that the Russian delegation at the summit be headed by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov instead of Putin. India and Brazil, for their part, rejected the option of moving the summit to China, Mashatile added.
- In March, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Putin and children’s ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova on charges of illegal deportation of children from the occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia. The South African Republic is one of the countries that signed the Rome Statute, which obliges it to implement the decisions of the ICC.
- In May, sources of the South African edition of the Sunday Times reported that the authorities of South Africa asked Vladimir Putin not to come to the BRICS summit.
- Bloomberg sources reported that South African authorities are considering all options to avoid execution of the warrant against Putin.
- After Russia’s attack on Ukraine last February, South Africa did not publicly condemn Moscow’s actions, stating that it would like to maintain neutrality and prefers dialogue to end the armed conflict.
