The Hungarian Parliament approved the suspension of participation in the CSTO

The Hungarian Parliament on Wednesday approved the suspension of the country’s participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe. 177 parliamentarians voted for this measure, five were against. The next decision must be signed by the head of state.

Last November, NATO countries, including Hungary, adopted a joint statement that they would indefinitely suspend their participation in the CFE. This was a reaction to Russia’s withdrawal from the agreement on November 7, 2023. Participation in the treaty was suspended by Moscow back in 2007, and the final procedures were completed by November 2023.

In December of last year, the USA left the CSTO, in March of this year – Poland and Moldova, in April – Turkey and Belarus. Other NATO countries are also conducting formal procedures for his denunciation.

• The CSTO was signed in 1990 in Paris by representatives of 16 NATO countries and six Warsaw Pact Organization countries. The document was updated in 1999, but ratified by only four participants — Moscow, Kyiv, Astana, and Minsk. He introduced a limit on the number of battle tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, attack helicopters and airplanes for the participants of the treaty.
• In 2007, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree suspending the agreement and related international documents until it is ratified by NATO countries. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization then stated that Moscow’s actions do not contribute to security in Europe.
