Employees of the so-called internal political blog of the administration of the President of Russia were advised to get rid of their iPhones and switch to devices with a different operating system by the end of March. “Kommersant” writes about this with reference to sources.
One of the interlocutors of the publication said that officials received the instruction to replace smartphones in early March at a seminar. According to sources, the requirement is related to information security. The presidential administration believes that iPhones are more likely to be hacked by Western specialists, Kommersant notes.
In a conversation with the newspaper, the source specified that in return, the employees were offered to change Apple devices to models with the Android operating system, its Chinese analogues, or the Russian Aurora.
Another informed source of “Kommersant” admitted that the Kremlin will buy new smartphones for employees.
The ban on the use of Apple technology will also apply to officials involved in internal politics in regional administrations, the publication clarifies.
However, experts interviewed by “Kommersant” say that the decision to replace the iPhone with other devices is not political and is dictated by security considerations.
According to Kommersant, the internal political block of the presidential administration includes four departments: internal policy, public projects, ensuring the activities of the State Council, and the development of information and communication technologies and communications infrastructure. Employees of the first three departments will be engaged in the campaign for the presidential elections in 2024.
