The last ship with Ukrainian food left the port of Odessa on Sunday morning as part of the existing grain deal. It expires on Monday, July 17.
Russia stopped issuing grain export permits at the end of June. The Turkish bulk carrier “Samsan” is heading to Istanbul. This is the last vessel that received confirmation for the export of grain.
The grain deal, according to which food is exported from Black Sea ports blocked by Russia, was concluded in July last year with the assistance of Turkey and the UN. The agreement was extended several times. The last time was May 17.
Russia indicated that during the validity of the grain deal, not a single vessel was sent with Russian fertilizers. In addition, Moscow insisted on connecting Rosselkhozbank to the SWIFT interbank payment system.
Recently, there have been reports that the UN and Turkey are working on extending the grain agreement. The Russian authorities have confirmed that negotiations are underway, but the final decision is still unknown. The Kremlin allowed Moscow to suspend the agreement.
Ankara and the UN call on Russia to extend the deal, as its suspension will lead to an unstable situation on the world food market and lead to famine in poor countries.
Kyiv accuses Moscow of deliberately delaying the cargo registration procedure at the center in Istanbul. In addition, the Ukrainian side believes that Russia will withdraw from the deal, including because it is finishing the construction of its ammonia pipeline to the port of Taman and is developing new routes to export its grain through Iran.
Ukraine is developing alternative food export routes along the Danube and overland, but they cannot fully compensate for the sea route.
