The last elected mayor of Novosibirsk is retiring

Novosibirsk Mayor Anatoly Lokot is resigning. This was announced by the governor of the Novosibirsk region, Andrey Travnikov. According to him, Lokot received a new job offer. Oleg Klemeshov, Lokt’s deputy, has been appointed temporary head of the Novosibirsk City Hall.

State Duma deputy from the CPRF Anatoly Lokot became the mayor of Novosibirsk for the first time in 2014 after the elections. At them, he appeared as an opposition candidate against the vice-mayor, United Russian Vladimir Znatkov. According to the voting results, about 44% of voters voted for Loktya (39.5% for Znatkov).
One of the important events in the politics of Lokt as the mayor was the so-called pact with the head of the Novosibirsk region Andrey Travnykov, when Lokt publicly refused to run for governor, and Travnikov promised to preserve direct elections for the head of the city. In 2019, Anatoly Lokot was re-elected for a second term.
The term of office of the mayor expired in 2024. In 2023, the deputies of the Legislative Assembly of the Novosibirsk region supported the bill on the abolition of direct elections of the mayor of the city.
In autumn, there was a conflict in Loktia with supporters of the war against Ukraine. In November, the mayor’s office of Novosibirsk admitted that public cemeteries are running out of places.
A few days after this statement, the Deputy of the Novosibirsk Oblast Assembly, Andrey Panfyorov (“United Russia”), one of the founders of the Vega volunteer battalion, participating in the war with Ukraine, criticized the work of the city administration due to the fact that servicemen are buried in a “poor sector” “Husynobrodsky cemetery.
Elokot replied to United Russia that a new military burial would be possible only “if there were funds” – for this Panfyorov called the mayor “a low-ranking official” and suggested sending him to the front. Later, Elkot instructed to allocate 12 acres of land for the burial of soldiers “with the observance of military rites.”
