Cancer activist Igor Baryshnikov, who is serving a sentence in a criminal case about “fakes” in a colony in the Kaliningrad region, is in a critical condition. Lawyer Maria Bonzler informed the Sever.Realiya website correspondent about this.

“He was transferred to colony No. 8, he is sitting in a detachment, in ordinary conditions. They treat him normally. But no one canceled the pain. He can neither sit nor lie down – the tube in his stomach is squeezed, urine does not flow. He walks with difficulty. All his hands and feet are blackened from the fungus he contracted here. But I think it’s also intoxication – he washes the cytostoma every day with these hands with the fungus. He is in a critical condition, he can’t be anywhere but a hospital, even a prison He urgently needs an operation. To be honest, we left him and even burst into tears,” the lawyer said.

Ihor Baryshnikov has confirmed oncology, and a cytostoma is installed in his stomach – a tube for the drainage of urine, which needs to be changed periodically. In the medical unit, it is changed without anesthesia. “It’s just life-saving. A surgeon comes, pulls out the tube, without anesthesia, then re-inserts it. Igor is in very severe pain because of this tube,” Bonzler said.

According to her, Baryshnikov’s defense appealed to the human rights commissioners of Russia and the Kaliningrad region. On December 26, the colony was inspected, but its participants did not find anything.

“There were UNCs [общественная наблюдательная комиссия], Usfinovtsy, the authorized representative sent his assistant. But they said that everything is fine, the hands are white, there is no fungus. Maybe they didn’t notice the phone? The next day, our lawyer Roman Morozov came and saw the same black hands from the fungus and the exhausted Igor,” said Bonzler.

The activist’s defense plans to apply to the UN Committee against Torture to obtain treatment for Baryshnikov.

“Ihor is killed in the most natural way. In the colony, he has already been issued with the third degree of disability, he will achieve the second degree. In the acting [освобождении по болезни] he was already refused, they thought he was healthy. We will serve it a second time. Also, after the holidays, we will file a cassation appeal,” says the lawyer.

  • 64-year-old Igor Baryshnikov is the first in Kaliningrad convicted in the case of “fakes” about the Russian army. In the spring of 2022, he posted anti-war posts on Facebook about the cruiser “Moskva”, murders in Buch and Mariupol. On June 22, 2023, the court sentenced the activist to 7.5 years in prison, despite the fact that he suffers from cancer and was the sole guardian of his 97-year-old paralyzed mother. A month and a half after Baryshnikov’s arrest, his mother died. They did not let him go to the funeral.
  • On November 21, the Kaliningrad Regional Court refused to change Baryshnikov’s sentence.
